How to Protect Yourself from the Bird Flu
|
To protect yourself against the Bird Flu, you should protect yourself against the common flu first. The most efficient method is to get vaccinated. Also, strengthen your immunity with vitamins, fresh air, and a balanced diet. Below is more detailed information about the nutrition. Buy meat, eggs and other aviculture products at organized markets only. Demand a certificate from the vendor. All production must be examined in laboratories. Don’t buy imported birds. Chicken meat can be eaten only after thorough thermal treatment. Virus dies immediately at 100°C, after 2-3 minutes at 65-70°C and only after 30-40 minutes at 50-60°C. Egg shells should be washed with soapy water and boiled for at least 10 minutes, and meat—for at least 30 minutes at 100°C. Refrain from buying decorative birds: canaries, parrots. They are often smuggled into the country. Not only people and birds can catch Bird Flu – our pets can also get sick. Don’t feed cats with raw chicken meat.
U.S. government agency “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” distributes special recommendations about the rules of conduct in zones where Avian influenza was found:
Avoid all contact with poultry, poultry meat and eggs. Never touch poultry– not only dead and sick, but those who look healthy. Don’t visit places where poultry is gathered in masses – such as farms, markets, etc. Contact with places that may have been contaminated with poultry feces and other bird secretions should be avoided.
As with other contagious diseases, one of the most effective methods of protection is frequent and thorough handwashing. Hands can be washed with soap or alcohol-based disinfectants.
Avian influenza virus is easily destroyed with thermal conditioning. All poultry products, including eggs, mustn’t be eaten in the raw state. Cooking must necessarily include thorough frying, boiling, etc.
Closely monitor your health for at least 10 days after your departure from a flu affected area. If you become ill with fever and develop a cough, sore throat, or difficulty breathing, etc.—consult the doctor immediately and mention your stay in a zone affected by the Avian influenza.
If you got sick: rest, drink a lot of liquid, don’t use alcohol and tobacco, and take the usual medicine intended for influenza cure. Remember that antibiotics are not capable of destroying the virus.
